Q. On a scale of 1-10 10 being the most fit, how fit would you say you are.
A. I’d have to say about an 8
Q. What is a typical workout for you?
A. I usually workout 6-7 days each week. Every workout is different. I typically spend 40 minutes strength training and 20-30 minutes doing cardio. I will occasionally do a crossfit workout or MMA training workout which combines the strength and cardio
training together.
Q. What are your eating habits? Any guilty pleasures?
A. I became a vegetarian about 7 or 8 years ago. I typically eat a lot of veggies and dairy products. Guilty pleasures? ha ha… I am still human and altho I’m a trainer I still face the same temptations and struggles as everyone else. I have a real big sweet tooth!!!! I love swedish fish or just about any chewy candy.
Q. Do you smoke or drink? How does it effect your healthy lifestyle?
A. I have never smoked. I had my first drink about 7 years ago (when my daughters became teenagers… hmmm). I drink wine
occasionally and once in a while will have a captain and diet coke or vodka. However, my day usually starts at 3:30am so I tend not to drink too much. I drink red wine so I try to convince myself it’s good for a healthy lifestlye : )
Q. What initially got you into personal training?
A. I used to be a competitive natural bodybuilder before I donated a kidney to my wife. I was employed as the Director of Security and Director of the Health and Phys. Ed Dept at a local college. With a wife, two daughters and medical bills, I started personal training on the side to pay for supplements. I found so much joy in helping people not only change their bodies but their lives as well. I ended up with more clients than I could manage so after 14 years at the college I left to pursue training full time. After over 20 years as a personal trainer, I can honestly say I love what I do and look forward to every new day “at work”!
Q. What’s your biggest obstacle with your clients?
A. Self doubt. I find many people talk themselves out of success! ”As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” I work on changing not only the body but mind set as well. When you believe you can achieve your fitness goals, I can help you by providing the tools and motivation to do so.
Q. What is the biggest mistake you see people at the gym making?
A. Doing the same workout day in and day out. I see people come into the gym going through the same routine and see no results, become discouraged then give up. It’s important to change your workouts to prevent plateaus. It will also keep you mentally and emotionally fueled to be consistent with your workouts. Every workout I put clients (and myself) through is different.
Q. Do you recommend any supplements?
A. I use them myself and believe they work. Being a vegetarian and working out so often I find it difficult to consume nutrient dense calories and get good sources of protein. Supplements help to achieve this. I generally don’t recommend them to clients tho unless they are athletes or have dietary restrictions such as a vegetarian. If asked I will give recommendations.
Q. After training/boxing how do your clients maintain their physique?
A. Nutrition is key! Research shows diet is responsible for 70-80% of weight loss and muscle gain. A healthy diet will not only maintain your physique but will also strengthen your immune system, balance your hormonal system, allow for proper brain function etc. I believe many of the illness, anxiety, and obesity in society today are the direct result of all the hormones, sugars and poor food choices we consume.
Q. What is the biggest difference between male and female clients aside from the obvious?
A. Males tend to want to build muscle and reduce bodyfat. Females tend to want to tone more specific areas such as thighs, butt, waist and arms. Generally men want to focus on the upper body (T-shirt muscles) and women tend to want to focus on lower body. I find women tend to be more open to new ideas and various workouts.
