What are Partial Reps?
My scientific definition is as follows; "A partial rep is an exercise movement performed through a limited range of motion."
Generally, when performing an exercises, as stated last week, we want to move the weight from the bottom to the top full range of motion to ensure stimulating the muscle fibers throughout the entire range of motion. This will also engage the stabilizer muscles as well. However, for a more intense workout, when you have reached the point of failure through a full range of motion, a FEW partial reps will push the muscle a little further causing a deeper burn and also more muscle fiber to be stimulated. An example of this would be as follows; During a standing barbell curl, you perform eight reps through a full range of motion. You feel you can not perform another full rep. Instead of setting the weight down, you perform a couple more reps through a half range or even less to push beyond muscle failure.
This is an advanced principle and is best done with someone spotting you... especially on exercises like bench press!
