Q. What kind of lean meat should I eat? I am tired of eating chicken and turkey.
A. Chicken and turkey breast are very nutrient dense and a great way to increase your protein intake. However, being a former natural bodybuilder, I have consumed more than my fair share of grilled turkey and chicken breast and would also get sick of it! By adding different spices and toppings, you can drastically change the flavour of turkey and chicken. It can be something as easy as putting salsa and grated low fat cheese with black beans over sliced grilled chicken breast, or some other easy recipe to something more elaborate. There are all kinds of low fat, low calorie recipes on line. However, if you still have had your fill of chicken and turkey, a lean cut of steak as well as fish is an excellent source of nutrient dense calories. I've never had lamb or venison (baby deer :( ...) but understand that is an excellent source of protein. Meats to avoid include hamburger, hot dogs, fatty cuts of beef, dark meat and any kind of sausage including chourico. These meats tend to be higher in fat and have higher sodium content. As I have always said tho, always choose the lesser of the evils when it comes to food. If you feel you will die if you don't have a hotdog or you feel you need a hamburger, look for healthier alternatives such as turkey sausage etc. Orrrrr.... you can always reach for a Morning Star product that is soy based such as a veggie patty that is not as high in fat, calories or as greasy as a traditional burger. They have a wide variety of products such as veggie sausage which I have had and found to be tasty with peppers on a bun! Be conscientious of your total caloric intake as well as your macronutrient (carbs, protein and fats) intake. A key thing to remember, no matter how lean or nutrient dense a meat may be, you can destroy it's nutrient value by preparing it with high fat/calorie sauces. Grilling meats, in my past experience has proven beneficial as well because it allows a lot of the fat and grease to burn off instead of sitting in it and absorbing it. *Always consult a REGISTERED DIETICIAN for proper diet and nutrition advice. Keep in mind everyone's body reacts different to various nutrients and may not benefit from a specific diet or nutrient intake.
