If having chicken, steak, fish, hamburger or any other protein as your main dish, cut up some spinach, celery, broccoli, green and red peppers, mushrooms, cauliflower, cucumbers, red onions etc., mix them together and serve. You can even order a nice sized garden salad in most restaurants with your meal instead of fries, rice, pasta etc... It's true... I've done it! Be careful however of high calorie/fat dressings and sneaky calorie laden foods such as green olives and croutons! By having salad as a side you will consume a lot of water soluble vitamins including vitamin C while increasing your fiber and iron intake as well. Foods such as spinach and broccoli are great for increasing iron which helps increase energy among other things. And, with vegetables having a higher water content, they are easy to digest without leaving you with that heavy, greasy, weighed down feeling.
