Potential Negatives of Raw Food
I have said it at least a million times... NEVER EXCLUDE SPECIFIC MACRONUTRIENTS! I believe our bodies best function from a balanced nutrient intake of carbs, proteins and fats in the proper ratio. It's difficult to consume complete protein from consuming just raw foods such as fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds. Diets that limit or cut out diary or meat completely will be lower in protein and vitamins such as B12 and D as well as minerals such as calcium and iron. These nutrients can be obtained by taking supplements.... but many of you know how I feel about synthetic, man made supplements : ) Another potential downfall to eating just raw foods is cooking, in most cases can kill any bacteria, parasites etc. A Registered Dietician can make recommendations if you have a pre-existing medical condition or health concerns. I recommend to never eat raw meats. This can be troublesome for many people. I eat sushi and enjoy it but have checked with my physician to ensure it is safe with me having only one kidney.
Eating raw foods such as fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds can be more expensive than processed foods. Dining out can be a challenge as well. But with some research you can still enjoy many of your favourite restaurants. Another downside of raw foods is the clean up after making smoothies etc... Cleaning the blender and cupboards... not from the fiber you consume! Just want to be clear ha ha.
Bottom Line
Increasing your consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains will provide your body quality nutrient dense calories. These foods will provide natural vitamins, minerals, and fibers that can help prevent diseases, reduce inflammation, and lower risk for heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and obesity. Adding more raw foods to your diet will help fill you up and lower the consumption of high fat, high cholesterol, sugar laden processed foods. 'Tis the season when fruits and veggies are plentiful and many local farms have an abundance of organic fruits and veggies. Why not make a big green salad with some sunflower seeds and almonds with some fruit for desert for lunch or dinner today?
