FALSE. We all grew up with the commercials and being told to drink milk for strong bones. It is true that milk and other dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, etc. are high in calcium which help increase bone density and tooth enamel. There are other sources which can help you avoid ingesting added hormones and antibiotics given to the cows and goats and passed through into their milk.
Why Do We Need Calcium?
Calcium, as most people know helps keep bones and teeth strong. This allows the skeletal system to support our body and function. Calcium also plays a role cell processes, blood clotting, muscle contraction and nerve function. Certain enzymes are activated with the use of calcium as well. Calcium is used to conduct electrical impulses throughout the body and helps maintain a regular heartbeat.
It is generally recommended adults consume 1,000 mg of calcium and women over 50 years old should consume 1,200 mg. There are foods other than dairy products which are calcium rich.
These foods include:
Leafy greens such as kale and spinach
Broccoli
Sardines
Soybeans and tempeh
Flax Seed
White Beans
Foods that are calcium-fortified
Consuming several various sources of calcium, avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy body weight and participating in strength training/weight bearing exercises will help increase bone growth and help prevent osteoporosis. *Some information gathered from ace.org.
